REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Research Impact InvestingAfter learning more about investing, how can you increase positive impacts and decrease negative impacts?
Tiffany Yount-Akimoto 10/19/2022 10:30 AMBe aware of who the companies you shop with or invest in support. A lot of banks actually support big oil companies including ones that led to massive spills in the oceans. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption What is Sustainable Fashion? How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Tiffany Yount-Akimoto 10/19/2022 10:29 AMI have always been a fan of hand me downs, clothes swapping, or taking jeans with holes and turning them into shorts. Finding ways to modify/ change the clothes I have to freshen them up seasonally is a great way to express my personality without buying more clothes. Our local buy nothing group has a few great clothing bins that they swap around with fem or masc clothing and childrens clothing in varying sizes. You can just dig through take what you like and add to it, then send it to the next person! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNourishing Food Advocate for Equitable Food AccessWhat changes would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods? How can your choices contribute to these changes?
Tiffany Yount-Akimoto 10/19/2022 10:19 AMI am all about the community gardens, and finding ways to grow native food crops. Native crops grow best in their home regions. You can't grow oranges and lemons very well in Oregon, it just isn't the right climate. If you teach about native crops and how to grow them in small spaces, I think it would help food insecurity a lot. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNourishing Food Forest-Friendly FoodsHow did you figure out ways to remove foods that are not forest-friendly?
Tiffany Yount-Akimoto 10/19/2022 10:17 AMI do not use palm oils, I try to be aware of how my food is made/ where it comes from. Our coffee is a huge one that I always pay attention to- I try not to buy coffee that is not sustainably grown. We mostly purchase coffee from a family that grows it themselves in Kona, Hawaii. It just is hard because we either have to pay for shipping which uses carbon resources, or order in bulk and wait for family to come here with it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Complete an Energy AuditWhat most interested you, or surprised you about your energy audit?
Tiffany Yount-Akimoto 10/19/2022 10:13 AMJust how much energy we actually use/ waste. Having teens in the home who constantly have computers or game consoles running/ updating is a huge waste of energy. Plus all the phone chargers being left plugged in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Calculate My Water FootprintWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Tiffany Yount-Akimoto 10/19/2022 10:12 AMOne way to reduce my water use is to be more aware about how often things need washed v don't. We already take 5 minute showers, conserve water for dishes- washing them by hand but not leaving the water running, we also only wash our clothes after they are actually dirty/ smelly (not the one time use before washing items) but like jeans, hoodies, tshirts, we will wash after a couple to several wears. This helps eliminate how much water we waste on washing our clothes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Advocate for Forest ProtectionHigher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?
Tiffany Yount-Akimoto 10/19/2022 10:10 AMWe use a lot of paper towels in my home, I need to get better about using the reusable ones. We have reusable napkins as well. If we keep using those this will help to eliminate paper waste, the need for cutting down trees, the chemicals they use to bleach the pulp from the trees, and the water they use for treating, pressing, and making the paper towels, It will also eliminate the need for all that plastic wrapping they put them in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Listen to a Nature PodcastWhat podcast did you choose and what did you learn on the podcast you listened to?
Tiffany Yount-Akimoto 10/19/2022 10:05 AMI am really enjoying the podcast Environmental evolutions. I am learning more and more how politics play into how we care about our environment and how the policies are all based on $$$$. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Volunteer in My CommunityWhat event did you volunteer for and what was the experience like for you?
Tiffany Yount-Akimoto 10/17/2022 1:40 PMI volunteer with a few groups, one is actually based on getting parents with young kids outside, another gets those with different abilities out on the trails. It is a very rewarding experience because it helps me feel like I am accomplishing something good, and I get to be outside! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Tiffany Yount-Akimoto 10/17/2022 1:38 PMMy family has a goal to spend 1000 hours outside each year. It has become very easy for us as we find time daily to get outside. Even in the rainy months we still spend time outside. I have to say though, this year I think we well exceeded our 1000 hours outside and the weather has made it that much easier.
