  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

Father Thomas Berry says our purpose is to celebrate the dawn, sunset, and seasons as a way to connect with the Earth. I agree with this. From my experience, dawn and sunset are the calmest and most peaceful times of the day. Even though they happen daily, each one feels unique — the colors, clouds, and sky create a different view that makes me feel connected to nature.

  • Spent less time on my phone and more time outdoors this weekend — went cycling through trails and fed some chipmunks 🐿️. It felt so peaceful helping them get ready for winter. Can’t wait to do this more often!

Starting the eco challenge a little late, but there's no time limit or schedule when it comes to living more environmentally conscious

    Simplicity
Social media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also take more time than we realize or intend to give. After doing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?

At the beginning of October, I deleted Instagram and Facebook from my phone. I'm now spending more time walking, reading, cooking, writing, and just enjoying life in the "real world" versus being glued to the screen, mindlessly scrolling. I don't miss the mental clutter and noise at all! It’s been a bit of an adjustment in terms of how I connect with my friends and family. I do miss seeing their updates and pictures, but not having social media is actually fostering deeper connections. I now call or send voice notes to my friends to talk about what’s going on in their lives, rather than just watching their stories or liking their posts and thinking that counts as real connection. 1000000000/10 recommend going cold-turkey.

    Water
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

I was surprised to learn that most of my water footprint comes from indirect use, like the water needed to produce food, clothing, and materials, rather than what I use at home. It changed how I think about water—it’s not just about saving during daily activities but also about making smarter choices in what I consume.
To reduce my footprint, I can eat more plant-based meals, choose sustainable products, and improve water efficiency at home. These small changes increase my awareness and help me bring a water-conscious approach into both my daily habits and professional work.

Nazly, I admire how you have looked into the issue of water footprint and identified specific actions you can take. Some of us try to be responsible when it comes to turning the faucet on and off, but you've looked beyond that to the whole cycle of consumer item production. Thank you for increasing my awareness through your post.

    Energy
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

I emit a lot of carbon when I travel abroad or to the westcoast. I plan on reducing my emissions by avoiding short domestic flights and avoiding products containing palm oil. I also want to reduce buying new things by thrifting more

How much screen time affects your carbon footprint. I got 835 Kg of CO2 per week

I had no idea that screen time could make an impact on your carbon footprint! Thanks for sharing that Mariam.

I also had never thought about this! I've reduced my (home) screen time by about 60% since the beginning of October - just by deleting FB and Instagram! I'm still working on cutting it down even further. I'm going to try to work out what my CO2 was before and after I started cutting down screen time.
