BACK TO TEAM PAGE

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

And this is the end of another great challenge… Thanks to all who shared thoughts and resources here. It was lovely to read your posts!
Moving forward, I hope to keep practicing to notice my days and tweak what I can to make them healthier, happier and more sustainable. Until next time!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?

I have been trying to get better at following Pollen's rule of eating: eat food; not too much; mostly plants.
Eating restaurant/take out "food" we never know what you are really eating and unfortunately I have been doing some of that, more than I would like. Another item to improve in the coming months...

I like this statement! I think it emphasizes the role we can actively play in our health. Much is out of our control where health is concerned, but many of us can implement small changes in diet that may have profound impacts!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

It has been really hard to get to this task and establish a routine in general... despite wanting to get back to a routine and some form of exercise, I have been tending to other things on my list and exercising has been neglected...

Don't be discouraged by this - you are trying, and it sounds like you've accomplished other goals.

It was hard for me to get out of bed in the morning, but once I did it one day, it became easier the next. You got this!

I've been walking with my neighbor and her dog almost every morning! It's great exercise and good social time before the work day begins!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Choose LED Bulbs
Switching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

Voting for candidates that will represent my values and enact laws to protect the environment is number one. As number 2, watch my everyday actions to identify where I can reduce waste and save resources - we are all in this together and every little bit counts!

Everyone! Reading various posts on different topics helps me learn from others, reflect on things I didn’t think about before and relate to others (I am not alone trying to navigate through attempts at making a difference!).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Tend a Garden
Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

Living in Florida, hurricanes show us the power if nature and how vulnerable we are - certain things we just cannot control and have to accept it. We experience that almost every year and sometimes multiple times a year…
At the same token, we witness nature’s resilience. It breaks down trees but that triggers new growth. We destroy fields, pour concrete to build roads, and nature takes over the minute we’re not looking.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

I have pots in the back of the house inside our screened patio. Herbs and pineapples are doing well and I have some avocado baby trees growing in pots to get them started. Once they mature, I will find a spot for a couple in the yard, next to our mango tree. Love growing food from seeds and scraps! I have started some garlic in the kitchen. They’re looking good so far

I saw a post that said: “Children see magic because they look for it.”
While I agree that they do see magic, I don’t think they look for it, but they simply look and see the magic that is all around us everywhere - sadly something that most adults forget to do…

I see magic and find the silver lining no matter how bad the situation is :)

    Community Learn About Constructive Communication
How can you, your loved ones, the community, and environment all benefit from constructive communication?

Coming together and listening to one another we can understand problems and positions better - and get to more rounded solutions.

Today I learned about a UF/IFAS Program called CIVICS. “CIVIC activities provide science-based information and engage participants in deliberative discussions that lead to increased knowledge of the issue, hearing different perspectives, and identifying actions that lead to community solutions.” It has helped communities come together on important issues, like the Indian River Lagoon health and climate change.
Here’s the link to that for the ones interested in learning more about the program: https://programs.ifas.ufl.edu/civic/civic-guide-and-evaluation/
