Chelsea's actions
Enacting Equity
Shop at BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Disabled, & Women-Led Businesses!
I will shop at a small business owned or staffed by underrepresented members of my community.
Balancing Consumption
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Nourishing Food
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will spend 15 minutes learning about palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and other products known to contribute to deforestation, and replace or remove them.
Cultivating Communities
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. digital/virtual attendance, vacation without air travel).
Balancing Consumption
Develop a Work-Life Balance
During the work day, I will schedule time for breaks to practice work-life balance.
Balancing Consumption
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Nourishing Food
Compost Food Scraps
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Regenerating Nature
Use Resources for Climate Anxiety
I will spend 15 minutes each day trying out climate anxiety resources that support mental and psychological well being.
Regenerating Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside and often with electronics with quality time outside walking, exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, observing nature, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Regenerating Nature
Take Shorter Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute or less showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNourishing Food Forest-Friendly FoodsHow did you figure out ways to remove foods that are not forest-friendly?
Chelsea Charles 10/10/2022 10:52 AMPalm oil, coffee, cocoa, and meat/dairy/eggs are the biggest foods that lead to deforestation in my research, and of course what Americans like the most of. We have to be creative and more aware of where our food comes from in order to avoid feeding these main groups that lead to deforestation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnacting Equity Shop at BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Disabled, & Women-Led Businesses! In your community, how can you work to address systemic racism, sexism, ableism and additional forms of exclusion in the businesses?
Chelsea Charles 10/10/2022 10:46 AMI can be more aware in identifying small businesses owned by these more-excluded groups and make those my main choices of places to shop. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Calculate My Carbon FootprintWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon impact? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon impact?
Chelsea Charles 10/10/2022 10:44 AMWays I will help to reduce the carbon footprint will be to grow my own food and to increase my composting! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCultivating Communities Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Chelsea Charles 10/07/2022 12:21 PMMy husband and I decided to drive to NJ and NY for an anniversary trip instead of fly. I figured it would be a lot cheaper and even quicker, even though it is about a 1 hour flight. The amount of time it takes to get up, pack, go to the airport, wait, and fly.... I could just drive! It was a fun time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Repair a Broken ItemWhat did you fix and how did it go? Share a few pics if you can!
Chelsea Charles 10/07/2022 12:16 PMI contemplated getting a new car seat for my son because I lost his cup holder attachment and it was getting pretty dirty. But after poking around in the garage and taking the car seat apart, I managed to find some spare tubing and bolts to create a new cup holder, plus I was able to give the car seat a good scrub. Its as good as new, even better! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Chelsea Charles 10/06/2022 9:11 AMAs these devices are coming out to help us feel more connected, this also is moving us to become disconnected from our outside world. This means that we sometimes miss the most beautiful, yet simple things in life... like seasons changing, tending to gardens, and also encouraging our children to enjoy the outdoors as well instead of staring at a screen. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Take Shorter ShowersWith 5-minute or less showers reducing your water footprint, what do you plan to add next to your water conservation habits?
Chelsea Charles 10/06/2022 9:09 AMI plan to turn off water when brushing my teeth, while I am washing hands, and when I am scrubbing dishes. Anytime water does not have to be running, turn it off! It saves water, and money on the bill! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Develop a Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Chelsea Charles 10/06/2022 9:08 AMWork life balance is something, I feel, every person can get lost with at one time or another. We can tend to feel obligated or pressured to keep up with work, but there will always be work. Things we can lose are time with family, friends, children, or for ourselves. I enjoy learning about and using new tools to reorganize myself and my work load so I do not allow my other responsibilities to suffer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Use Resources for Climate AnxietyIs climate anxiety a new concept for you or something you have been following for sometime?
Chelsea Charles 10/06/2022 9:06 AMThis is something new to me, but I am enjoying learning about climate anxiety more! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNourishing Food Compost Food ScrapsAs you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Chelsea Charles 10/06/2022 9:06 AMI am noticing a huge difference just in the amount of trash I am removing from my bin and putting in my garbage. We are also making moves to be more aware if items are recyclable!
