    I fixed my hiking shoes (needle and thread) instead of returning them to REI, or trashing them. This made me think about recycling of the rubber sole.

    Return the inexpensive items that I've purchased, but I didn't like, or didn't fit right. Some examples are clothes from Costco and Amazon.
