Marina's actions
Regenerating Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant a few in my area.
Regenerating Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) per day typically spent inside and often with electronics with quality time outside walking, exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, observing nature, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Balancing Consumption
Know My Waste & Recycling Services
I will spend 5 minutes finding out how to recycle in my region, where landfills and/or waste sites are situated in my region, and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Balancing Consumption
Track My Purchases
I will maintain a record of all my purchases and identify my spending habits.
Regenerating Nature
Take Shorter Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute or less showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Enacting Equity
Learn something new from the NJDEP website
Expand your DEP knowledge horizon! Spend at least 15 minutes learning about a Popular Topic, Program Area (other than your own) or other Initiative from the NJDEP website
Cultivating Communities
Use Muscle Power & Alternative Ways to Travel
Each day when I don't need to travel by car, I will use muscle-powered transportation and other alternative forms (e.g., walking, biking, car share, public transit, etc.).
Enacting Equity
Shop at BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Disabled, & Women-Led Businesses!
I will shop at a small business owned or staffed by underrepresented members of my community.
Enacting Equity
Learn About Trans, Femme, and Nonbinary Experiences
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Cultivating Communities
Pull Together Items to Donate
Each day, I will find one or more items I can donate to a local thrift or resale shop.
Nourishing Food
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will spend 30 minutes learning about palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and other products known to contribute to deforestation, and replace or remove them.
Balancing Consumption
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Regenerating Nature
Calculate My Water Footprint
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.

Marina Jackson 10/26/2022 10:39 AMI loved learning about my local pollinators!! I unfortuantely wasn't able to plant any native flowers since I don't have a yard but I did help distribute milkweed seeds!! -
Marina Jackson 10/17/2022 10:03 AMI learned about where trash and recycling go in Philadelphia. Most trash goes to the Covanta Delaware Valley center where it gets burned. Recycling is a little less clear but Philadelphia has had a difficult time with recycling in the past with a lot of sanitation workers combining the trash and recycling in the same bin. This is extremely frustrating. I am still learning of ways to make sure that my recycling actually gets recycled. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCultivating Communities Use Muscle Power & Alternative Ways to TravelHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Marina Jackson 10/11/2022 5:26 AMMy experience with my community is completely different when walking or biking versus driving in my car. I really feel like I can get to know my community better by slowing down, literally, and paying attention to all the shops and different houses. For me, biking is so fun and such a great alternative to driving!
