How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

This is overall one of my strong suits, I realize. I think I get it from my father. He didn't keep stuff around. He had things he really loved and used often. While I grew up with that influence it is also just a part of me because I have siblings who love all the things. :-)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Balancing Consumption Less Screen Time
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

Connecting with the outside world, nature is fundamental to human wellbeing. While positive learning and connections can be made through screens it does not replace in person human connections.  Loss of interactions with other humans and nature can also mean a decrease in physical activity and mental health.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nourishing Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

Sadly, the food waste does not surprise me. As a country, food waste is not something we really talk about. In addition to many topics related to our food systems. I strive to compost most of my food waste. Living in town this is hard to do even with a backyard composter because I create a lot of produce scraps. I would rather use that money on food actually. Buying from farmers that have positive practices that contribute to soil and animal health.

Creativity helps you expand your thinking to be open to using things you already have or can fashion to help reach a solution for a need.

What is one way you will reduce your carbon impact? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon impact?

While I do drive an automobile, I already make an effort to combine errand trips and only go for things I really need. Weather permitting, I will also walk or ride my bicycle for errands.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nourishing Food Forest-Friendly Foods
How did you figure out ways to remove foods that are not forest-friendly?

This is something I did already have some awareness of and was interested in learning more about. I do look out for palm oil in products. I also strive to purchase meats and eggs from local producers who also grow the vast majority feed for their animals and have good animal husbandry practices.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Balancing Consumption What is Sustainable Fashion?
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

Mending clothing I already have is one thing that I like to do to extend the life of an article of clothing. Trading, or clothes swap with friends can be fun and give a refresh to one's wardrobe without having to go shopping. I do also enjoy shopping at consignment or thrift stores because you can find unique items.
