Cultivating Communities
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. digital/virtual attendance, vacation without air travel).
Enacting Equity
Learn About Trans, Femme, and Nonbinary Experiences
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Nourishing Food
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will spend 10 minutes learning about palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and other products known to contribute to deforestation, and replace or remove them.
Regenerating Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant a few in my area.

Reduce Social Media Use
I will use my social media only once per day.

Develop a Work-Life Balance
During the work day, I will schedule time for breaks to practice work-life balance.

Less Screen Time
I will replace 60 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Balancing Consumption
Needs Vs. Wants
Each day, I will practice a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Balancing Consumption

I will spend 20 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and adopt at least one sustainable fashion practice.

Amanda Smith 10/26/2022 6:14 PMLoved participating in these challenges I hope to continue to keep up using less social media and looking at screens and more doing what what I love and learning about new things -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Amanda Smith 10/25/2022 3:29 PMYou have to be creative to live simply because sometimes you might have what you really want but you learn to use what you have in new ways. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Less Screen TimeWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Amanda Smith 10/25/2022 3:28 PMwe don't learn from the source and it creates less real experiences for ourselves. We live through what other people do or appear to be doing. We loose the real people enteratcions adn communities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Develop a Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Amanda Smith 10/25/2022 3:27 PMIf I take my breaks and decide to read instead of scroll on my phone it becomes more sustainable. It also just gives me a rest from screens even just for a little while. Helps me find what is most important to me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Reduce Social Media UseSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Amanda Smith 10/25/2022 3:25 PMI have noticed that most of the time I just scroll for way to long and am seeing the same content. Through out this process I have been able to monitor how long i am scrolling and try to only look at a few accounts that are important to me and then but my phone doesn't for the day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNourishing Food Forest-Friendly FoodsHow did you figure out ways to remove foods that are not forest-friendly?
Amanda Smith 10/25/2022 3:20 PMI looked up more sustainable food options and company's that are more eco friendly and started swapping out some items I use for more eco foods and products. -
Amanda Smith 10/25/2022 3:19 PMFeel like this challenge flew by but I am glad I took on the challenge and I will try to make keep up my goals and learning more after the challenge is over. -
Amanda Smith 10/23/2022 10:10 AMGoing strong and learning a lot along the way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Amanda Smith 10/23/2022 10:09 AMWithout pollinators we wouldn't have fruit or flowers or really much of any plants. They are very important for us and the earth to live. I love black and white ruffed lemurs before I took on this challenge I didn't realize they were even considered pollinators. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCultivating Communities Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Amanda Smith 10/23/2022 10:04 AMwe decided that driving would be a better option and cheaper for us. we mapped out the mileage and estimated the cost of gas and ultimately became a better option for us to drive rather than fly.
