Jennifer's actions
Energy
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 20 incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Take the Pre-Survey
Take the Pre-Event Survey
I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)
Energy
Invite a Friend to Calculate Their Carbon Footprint
Individual actions are important, but people and organizations working together can make a real impact. I will share a carbon calculator with a friend and invite them to calculate the carbon footprint of their household.
Nature
Explore a New Trail or Nature Walk
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.

Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 21 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Health
Reduce Refined Sugar
Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.
Health
Audit Toxic Products in my Home
Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 60 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.
Nature
Learn About the Impact of Old Refrigerants
I will spend 5 minutes researching the impact of old harmful refrigerants on our environment.
Waste
Research Local Waste and Landfill Sites
I will spend 60 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Visit a Local Recycling Center, Landfill, or Transfer Station
Seeing where waste goes can change how we think about what we throw away. I will visit a local facility to learn more about the waste stream in my community and share what I learn with others and in the feed.
Waste
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Water
Fix Leaky Faucets
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 3 gallons (11 L) of water per faucet every day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Jennifer Day 10/31/2025 7:34 AMWe don't have curbside bins, and pickup services in my area don't all offer recycling services. Trash dropoff centers have some recycling options, but they aren't consistent across all locations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Jennifer Day 10/31/2025 7:32 AM- Parent 🐻
I feel calm and more grounded after spending a good amount of time in the woods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow did exercising each day impact your physical or mental well-being? What activity did you enjoy most, and why?
Jennifer Day 10/31/2025 7:30 AM- Parent 🐻
I like the "good" soreness after. I don't have a lot of time, so yoga is my typical go-to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now? What was the most challenging part of reducing refined sugar, and how did you overcome it?
Jennifer Day 10/31/2025 7:29 AM- Parent 🐻
Not so much addicted, but I have random moods with ADHD that has me fixate on certain tastes/textures at times.
For example, if I crave carbonation, I'm okay with sparkling water instead of sodas.
The hardest one for me to eliminate is sugar in my tea or coffee. I've reduced it, but eliminating altogether is going to be rough. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterFixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?
Jennifer Day 10/28/2025 7:58 AM- Parent 🐻
Replacing shower heads with ones that use less water. When the water heater goes out, I'll be trying to replace it with a tankless water heater. We don't run the washing machine if we don't yet have a full load.-
Linda Theobald 10/28/2025 8:46 AMI do my best to save up dishes all day and then wash them in the evening rather that running water for just a few plates. I hand wash, rinse and dry as I end up using less water and electricity that way. Laundry for one is easy to take care of once a week. I save potable water for watering plants. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat did you fix and how did it go? Share a few pics if you can!
Jennifer Day 10/28/2025 7:56 AM- Parent 🐻
I typically do all of my own repair work if I can, repairing electrical issues in my house, replacing parts on my car, fixing the neighborhood kids' bikes, sewing tears in clothes, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow well do you know the area you live in? In what ways is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you?
Jennifer Day 10/28/2025 7:53 AM- Parent 🐻
I like knowing that there are so many places in my city that strive to provide fresh foods for those in need in our communities. I also love that I was able to get my kids involved at an early age volunteering in gardens. They get so proud of watching the plants grow that they help to nurture. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Jennifer Day 10/28/2025 7:50 AM- Parent 🐻
My kids and I often go for meatless dinners, not only reducing our cost, but lessening the overconsumption of meats in our country that puts a strain on resources -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Jennifer Day 10/24/2025 10:04 AM- Parent 🐻
We switched everything to lower usage bulbs and make sure lights are turned off when needed, use only 1-2 bulbs in fixtures that typically use 3-4, unplug electronics that are not actively in use, etc.-
Tina Reisedge 10/24/2025 11:00 AMWe have done some of the same things, Jennifer, except we have not switched to fewer bulbs in light fixtures. I love that idea!

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?
Jennifer Day 10/23/2025 6:40 AM- Parent 🐻
I typically feel better the more real vegetables I eat. Didn't try anything new this week, but enjoyed some of my favorites- brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, and asparagus.-
Jennifer Day 10/23/2025 7:30 AM- Parent 🐻
I like to roast them with olive oil (or bacon grease, lol), salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, and sometimes a sprinkling of shredded parmesan. -
Brittany Zahorchak 10/23/2025 7:28 AM- Plant Parent 🪴
I love all three of those foods! I haven't found a brussels sprout I didn't like! What is your favorite way to eat them?
