For people remodeling their home, make sure you check out Habitat for Humanity where they resell home items that are donated to them and then resold for cheap! That way, you can help decrease your budget while possibly still getting the home style you desire!

When taking a food order to go that requires using utensils, straws, plates, etc...instead of taking the plastic utensils from the restaurant, see about using reusable utensils and plates at home. This will help with creating more waste and will reduce the plastic waste that goes into our ocean.

Even though the Eco-Challenge is about to end in 3 days, this challenge should be a good reminder to continue to implement some of the eco-friendly changes to our daily routines!

Some paper items that you can switch to and recycle easily include:

    • Pasta and cereal boxes
    • Flour and sugar paper packaging
    • Pizza boxes (check your local recycling guidelines to see if they accept them)
    • Stationary, writing paper, file folders and newsprint
    • Magazines, catalogs and most direct mails
    • Drink cartons or beverages packaged in paper holders

For those who do not go to a bottle drop to recycle cans and bottles, you can create a bottle drop account and drop off bags of your cans and bottles or deposit them yourselves and your funds will get put into your account. You then have the decision of withdrawing the funds or gaining an extra 20% if you decide to close to get a grocery voucher instead! Getting the extra 20% for my groceries makes it feel like I gained a reward for doing my part in recycling! Go check it out!

Fun fact from an article I read: Plastic never goes away. At least 14 million tons of it ends up in the ocean annually, making up 80% of all marine debris. Every year thousands of seabirds, sea turtles, seals and other marine mammals are killed after ingesting plastic or getting tangled up in it. You can start cutting down on your plastic waste in a few simple steps: Use reusable bags when you shop, ditch single-use water bottles, bags and straws, and avoid products made from or packaged in plastic whenever possible (e.g., select unwrapped produce at the grocery store). Switch from single-use to reusable products every chance you get — every piece of plastic avoided is a win for the planet.

Wanted to share some benefits of how Solar Panels can help improve for our economy! I had solar panel in my old house and loved it! It also reduces my main electricity company power bill and your home generates new power into the grid. Previously, Tesla was our solar panel company and they had an app that shows you how much energy you have generated! I am now thinking of getting solar panels for my new home!

There's a one time action for "work from home" under the transportation category to help get some workers in the office to save on oil, burning less fuel, etc...I know there are still some of who need to go to work to socialize, have kids, or other obstacles but I had a co-worker who didn't like to work at home at all. He tried to stay at home at work once a day to help save time and fuel, and he discovered that he loved working at home. It saved him time from traveling, he was able to get things for lunch/dinner prepared during his breaks, waste less fuel, and more! To help save on burning fuels and causing less carbon emission, try working from home for an extra day if permitted. This would also cause less traffic for other's and you may end up liking working from home more often!
