The eco challenge is almost over and I'm realizing I am holding out on one action in particular: changing some lightbulbs over to LED. This requires me to go around the house, assess which lighting needs to be changed, get the bulb size, go to the store and get the new bulbs, come home and replace them. We need prompts like this to make actual change (thank you, eco challenge!). We need to do more than just computer actions. So, I am going to try to commit to this tonight!! Wish me luck!

i usually have the old clothing (its not so old, its just i am not wearing) thrown away directly to the bin, now i would gather them and send it to the thrift store (that are with better reputation in helping the society)

Why do you think advocating for resilient power grids is important, and how could it benefit your community? What would need to be changed in order for these benefits to become reality?

Transitioning away from fossil fuels can benefit everyone. Specifically, in my area, we are prone to flooding, drought, and now, fire. Decreasing GHGs reduces global warming and the threat of severe weather events. A renewable, resilient grid is absolutely necessary in my community -- not just for environmental reasons, but for social resiliency. Electricity is central to how we leave, and if we don't have reliable energy, there will be an inequitable share of electricity.

Today, I wrote to the county planning committee to get an update on the solar project that was, earlier this year, rejected by the community. I expressed my support.

How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?

It was pretty easy and actually saves money. Do it!

I learned about the superfund sites near us and realized there is one only a block away from my house where the old hospital used to be.

Before going on vacation to Maine, I made sure my heat was shut off and I disconnected all outlets -- phantom energy is bad! And we don't need Wi-Fi if we're not there! It's the little things.

A recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?

That's extremely messed up. We must keep supporting each other and not big business.

We recently held a virtually check-in over Teams and it was really nice to hear each other's stories. Sometimes it's easy to feel isolated in this work, but knowing your colleagues have similar concerns and are committed to learning makes this so much easier. Keep chuggin away, folks!

How do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?

Did you know that 75% of our food crops need pollination? That means, without pollinators, we would be very hungry! Not only us, but many other species. Pollinators are essential to biodiversity. I am making it my mission to decrease the use of pesticides and increase pollinator habitat where I can.

Without pollinators, I would miss the beautiful flowers as well as foodstuffs like apples and chocolate and coffee. Many yards in my neighborhood--including the one right outside my door!--are pollinator-friendly. It's good to see so many people supporting our pals who pollinate!

Thank you for getting the word out on this important issue! Be sure to check out native species in your area - I love roses and dahlias, but am learning that there are quite a few lovely native plants to place around my garden, too.

I regularly volunteer in my community at my local library and virtually through ESW HQ! I love volunteering in my spare time! Also, with my connection to the library I get to hear about all the fun adult crafts and was able to make a spooky ghost scene painting and a bat keychain!

I have been vegetarian since April 2021. Recently, I started eating chicken again which allowed for a healthier lifestyle. Even though I will sometimes eat meat, I enjoy my meatless meals I cook at home regularly! My favorite new recipe I tried was cheesy asparagus and orzo!! :)
