  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

Hikes and mushroom hunting are obviously great; we live in one of the most picturesque parts of the country but some of the best hikes and trails require travel and driving (e.g. burning fossil fuels,) Trying to make a conscious effort to explore more localized gems... Lone Fir Cemetery is a block away from me and is a peaceful, serene place to get some much-needed steps in.

I feel as though as Americans we are "taught" at an early age to consume as much as possible. Everyone here can relate to targeted ads if you watched television/movies, especially being highly impressionable as a kid. It's important to realize our own needs vs. wants and adjust accordingly.

I started keeping a list of every durable good I acquired (meaning I didn't include ephemeral things like food and paper towels) along with what it cost, if anything. I'm really amazed at what I've been able to salvage for free--especially furniture, like chairs, tables, and storage shelves.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

I think Father Thomas Berry is correct that our primary purpose is celebration. Humans look to form relationships with one another and find companionship. The best moments in life are when your friends/family are around you celebrating the big, little, and everything in between.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

No, this does not surprise me. American portion sizes are extremely large, especially at restaurants. I would rather use the $1500 for a trip with my husband :)

Great point! Becoming more responsible with buying food comes with perks: not only helps it with food waste, but also create more opportunities to save money for vacations and new experiences.

Using one item for multiple purposes can cut down on clutter
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

    Kellye Dundon's avatar
    Kellye Dundon 10/31/2024 10:36 AM
Increasing our thermostat temp in the summer to reduce electricity used for AC

Not trying to piggyback (maxed out on actions) but wanted to respond to the question, lol. No AC here so summers can be brutal at times but tolerable for the most part. I use my air fryer to do a lot of the cooking instead of the oven. In the winter, the heat is rarely turned on unless it's absolutely needed. Ambient heat from cooking/lights/tv and heavy blankets/warm clothes will suffice. It's easy enough to tolerate but I would probably change my tune if I lived with a roommate/family/etc.
